Linzi & Lee Wedding Blog
Linzi and Lee got married earlier this year (2019) here at Perth Racecourse. Perth Racecourse was the perfect venue for their wedding as Linzi’s Grandad had enjoyed many days out at the races in his heyday, so it was a very special place for Linzi and Lee. Here’s the story of how they met and how they came to celebrate their day with us…
Where did you meet?
Eight years ago, in a well-known pub in Fife after a few too many drinks!!
How was the big question popped?
Lee proposed at the Ozone Bar in Hong Kong, one of the highest bars in the world. It was amazing.
Whilst Lee was trying to get down on one knee, I was too busy looking at myself in my phone trying to fix my hair! We had tapas and cocktails looking over Hong Kong. Our favourite place we’ve travelled to yet.
How did you end up choosing to get married at Perth Racecourse and why?
My Di (grandad) passed away a few years ago. He was a loveable old rogue who gambled a lot in his heyday and spent a lot of time suited and booted at the races. So much so, his ashes were scattered at the finish line of Perth Racecourse. When the racecourse came up in our search online, I couldn’t wait to view it. We knew from our first visit it was the venue for us. Having exclusive access meant we could have the marquee, barn and function room all in one day. Having a hotel newly built on site sealed the deal as we knew it would make it easier for our friends and family to be there.
What did you find was the most helpful thing about having an Event Planner onsite?
Liz, our event planner, was amazing. She was so helpful right from the word go. We booked our wedding almost 3years in advance and I was hyper organised about everything; wanting lots of details pinned down months before. Liz was so patient and kind, always responding to emails in a timely manner and making herself accessible over the phone. She was a great help in the weeks leading up to the wedding.
Did you have a theme? What was it and why did you choose it?
We didn’t really have a theme. We just knew we wanted neutral colours with lots of flowers and greenery, in fitting with the surroundings of the racecourse. We also wanted the finer details to be as personal as possible.
How did you personalise your wedding day? Where did you get your inspiration?
We just wanted the wedding to be a bit of us and nothing too over the top.
We had a playlist in the barn full of our favourite songs.
Our favours were a nod to my di (one of his favourite drinks - Southern Comfort). The table plan was homemade using a map canvas, with the table names being places we love. The centrepieces featured Hendricks Gin bottles; something we have all around our flat as ornaments. We added personal messages to the inside of everyone’s place cards including nicknames/inside jokes. We had a picture table with lots of old photos and used an old wine crate for posting cards. I also made a shelved display full of toiletries and flip flops for the ladies toilet so we’d be sorted for night-time.
I had a lot of fun buying all the nick nacks.
Our florist was amazing at bringing the whole thing together and making everything look incredible. She was a big inspiration to me as I had followed her work on Instagram for a long time.
How did you feel walking down the aisle/standing at the altar?
I loved every minute of walking down the aisle. The marquee looked stunning. And to have all of our family and friends there was just amazing.
We kept it fairly intimate with just over 50 guests.
Our celebrant was brilliant and delivered a very personal service that made everyone laugh and smile.
What are some of the compliments you’ve received about your wedding day?
Everyone loved the barn for mingling and went mad for our drinks van (Camperbar company) and all the different gins. People loved the racecourse and commented it was a very unique venue. They also loved the food.
Tell us about a favourite or memorable moment during your wedding?
There are too many to choose from!
I loved walking down the aisle with my dad. We had an acoustic version of Ella Eyre & Sigala “Came Here for Love” playing and I still watch the video on repeat. It was so special and I couldn’t wait to see Lee.
The speeches were incredible: my dad, Lee, and his best man all gave really funny and emotional speeches. The photographer managed to capture everyone’s reactions perfectly.
I loved our first dance and seeing all our guests in the one room at night. The atmosphere was buzzing and everyone looked so happy.
Describe how you found the process of selecting your wedding menu?
It was really difficult to pick canapés because they all looked so good.
And for the main meal, we wanted a choice that would suit everyone so we took a bit of time to decide.
In the end we went for food we’d like to eat and it worked out. Liz made the process very simple.
How would you describe the service and quality of the food on your wedding day?
The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. Zoe was always there to communicate timings and who should be where at which point etc. We were made to feel like nothing was a bother. The food was great from start to finish!
The beef and chicken for main course were both delicious. And even though we were too busy to eat the canapés, people told us they were equally as good.
The hot rolls at night with wedding cake (made by a very good friend) were just what we needed!
What words of wisdom do you have for couples planning their wedding?
Do your wedding your way in every sense and you won’t regret it.
The decisions that stress you out or make you feel bad in the short term will make you so happy in the long term.
I never really believed anyone who said it’s the best day of your life but it really is!! Just enjoy it.
