Brian Hughes Treble Lights Up Glorious Finale

Spectacularsunrise produced an impressive debut over fences as the Glorious Finale brought the curtain down on another memorable season of racing at Perth.

Ridden by Sam Twiston-Davies, the 15/8 second favourite put in an assured round of jumping before powering clear to land the Christmas Party Nights At Perth Racecourse Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase by six lengths from top-weight Tamarind Bay.

Joint-trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies was delighted with the performance and believes there could be plenty more to come from the promising novice.

“That was good and we’re very pleased – he’s actually a horse I also bred,” said Twiston-Davies. “His jumping was good and he should stay further and go on softer ground.

“We always bring a decent horse up for this race and he’s one of our better novices. I’d say he could go for something at one of the early Cheltenham meetings after this.”

There was also plenty to celebrate for three-time champion jockey Brian Hughes, who enjoyed a superb afternoon in the saddle with a 350/1 treble.

His first success came aboard Datstheholyallofit, who followed up her recent Sedgefield victory with another determined performance in the Saltire Hospitality EBF Mares’ ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle.

Winning trainer Patrick Neville said: “She’s got plenty of ability but she’s been busy, so we’ll give her a quick break now. She might have a run on the Flat and then go handicap hurdling – she’ll even jump a fence one day.”

Hughes doubled up when the Iain Jardine-trained Elemental Eye secured a breakthrough success over hurdles in the House of Bruar Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle.

The jockey then completed a memorable 350/1 treble aboard Upfordebate, who came home in front in the Equine Products UK Best Turned Out Handicap Chase, rounding off another hugely successful visit to the Scone track for Hughes.

Lucinda Russell and Michael Scudamore were also among the winners, with Idem, partnered by Patrick Wadge, taking the Edinburgh Gin Owner Trainer Jockey Awards Handicap Hurdle.

The Glorious Finale once again provided a fitting conclusion to the Perth racing season, with competitive action on the track and fantastic support from racegoers, owners, trainers, jockeys and partners across the two-day fixture.
